Playstation 3 Rock Band 2 Special Edition
February 5th, 2010 by admin

I JUST purchased the new Alone in the Dark game on the xbox360…I say just, however, I have been playing it solidly for about 8 hours now, and yes, I may have reached the final chapter of a game I purchased 24 hours ago, but you know what? I don’t care!

Now don’t get me wrong, as with many next-gen games, and it does have its flaws, both graphically and physically, but unlike most of the drivel that is released these days, you don’t actually mind them. At the end of the day, you are too engrossed in solving the next puzzle, killing the next tentacle spewing Humanz, or simply admiring the graphics.

So since there is simply so much to this game, I’ll try and even out the bad and the good. To begin with, I got through to the second chapter with relative ease, and was suddenly juggernauted into a situation where I was to drive through the city whilst being chased by some weird crack monster…now…if I can meet the person who has successfully completed this area of the game without either shouting at the screen or having to replay the same level about 20 times in order to FINALLY get the method right.

However, the physics engine used in this game is currently unparalleled; my guess is until Gears of War 2 is released. There are some places where you need to drag rope across to the edge of a cliff in order to lower yourself down, however, the rope actually drags, it’s not simply picked up, which to be honest is actually rather impressive, though not something I would dwell on for too long.

The worst aspect of this game is undoubtedly the controls, something that I actually predicated to be an issue. Depending on the current situation, the controls change, meaning that when climbing a rope, and going into FPS mode, you no longer press the B button to change the view point…in fact, doing so actually makes you drop the rope and plummet to your death…something I found to happen multiple times.

Water…I think that one word sums up the graphics. I mean, if you though Bio shock had impressive water effects, these are phenomenal. Unlike most games released, the water is not in a constant phase of motion, as, lets face it, water doesn’t constantly move. Instead water moves as it is required, though does not move with you in a realistic manner. But you know what? I don’t care because this game is brilliant!

Overall, this game is the best game I have played in a while, with brilliant visuals (to say its not cut-scene graphics) an amazing engine and an awesome story, full of twists and turns, and puzzles galore! Also, for you achievement people out there, playing the game pretty much gets you about 800 points, without even trying.

So go out and treat yourself, and if you can get the special edition for £5 more. You get the art book, soundtrack, making of documentary and a cool little figure of Edward! Awesome!
